Admittedly, the name of this plant can be a bit misleading, as lemon or lemongrass is not a citrus fruit but belongs to the family of sweet grasses (Poaceae). The citrus-like scent that gives this grass its name is released when the grass blades are crushed. The grass is very hardy, and its reed-like stalks can grow up to 1.5 meters tall. It loves warm, tropical temperatures and nutrient-rich, loose soils. The highest concentration of valuable essential oils, which give the grass its citrus-fresh aroma, is found in the light-colored stems of the leaves.
